Calendar Change!

All schools in the Washington County School District will be closed on Monday, August 21, 2017, due to the anticipated total solar eclipse. This decision has been made so that parents and families can make the decision of where and how to view the eclipse safely. Washington County School District believes that while it is a very educational experience, ensuring the complete protection of each student viewing the eclipse in the dark while at school would be extremely difficult for our teachers and staff. Early release would also present an issue, as we would be unable to secure the safety of our students while on our buses. The Washington County Board of Education will decide at a regularly scheduled board meeting as to whether students will use the day as a bank day, make-up day on President’s Day or add an additional day to the end of the calendar. During a total solar eclipse, the moon will pass between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow over Earth. Our schools will take this exceptional opportunity to instruct our students on the science surrounding this spectacular event prior to the event. Special solar eclipse glasses will be sent home on Friday, August 18, 2017 with each student and parents/families may then choose to use them to participate in the event.
