3rd Grade Students Experience the Life Cycle of a Monarch Butterfly

By Mrs. Metcalf

The 3rd grade students at WCES had the opportunity this year to watch the complete life cycle of a butterfly occur. Kimberly Bartley from Kentucky Division of Conservation came in to talk with the students about the life cycle of a butterfly, how she finds the eggs and how to determine if it’s a boy or girl. She also brought with her three caterpillars that would go through their life cycle during the next few weeks. The 3rd graders have been able to see the caterpillar change into a cocoon and emerge as a beautiful butterfly. Two of the butterflies were girls and the last one was a boy. We named each of them and then released them out into the world. This has been a great lesson and experience for the students. The amazement of watching this process has a been a true joy.
