WCHS Senior Achieves Ivy League Acceptance into Columbia University

(SPRINGFIELD, Ky.) – Jacob Piasecki, a Washington County High School graduating senior, has been accepted into Columbia University, one of the only eight Ivy League universities in the United States. According to the U.S. News & World Report, Ivy League schools are “considered the most sought-after institutions of higher learning in the country and around the world.” Founded in 1754, Columbia University, a private research university, is the oldest institution of higher education in New York, and the fifth oldest in the United States. Piasecki’s acceptance into an Ivy League university is believed to be only the second in the school and district’s recent history.
“I decided to apply to Columbia because of its unique location in New York City and the strength of the programs within environmental science,” said Piasecki, who plans to major in sustainable development. He also considered attending Centre College and the University of Richmond. At WCHS, he is a member of the Commander Cross Country team, the Commander Golf team, the Commander Tennis team, the Commander Track & Field team, serves as president of Student Council, president of the National Honor Society, and is an officer in the Environmental Club. He is also a member of the Beta Club and the National Art Honors Society, as well as the Academic Team and the Technology Student Association. Piasecki attended the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program the summer before his senior year. He is also involved in Washington County 4-H Shooting Sports and attended the 4-H National Congress, is a Kentucky 4-H Gold Achievement Award winner and serves as a Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Ambassador.

“Jacob Piasecki is one of those students who leaves a lasting impression long after they leave the classroom,” said Jamaal Stiles, science teacher at WCHS. “I’ve had the privilege of teaching him in both AP Biology and AP Environmental Science, and in that time, I’ve watched him grow into an incredibly thoughtful, driven, and genuinely kind person. Jacob approaches everything he does with purpose and determination, whether it’s tackling challenging coursework, serving as an officer in the Environmental Club, or stepping up as a leader on the Academic Team. What sets Jacob apart is not just his academic ability, but his character. He leads by example, supports those around him, and brings a positive presence to every space he’s in. He truly cares about his work, his peers, and his community. This is apparent in everything he does. Jacob has made WCHS a better place simply by being part of it, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been his teacher.”
“I've been privileged enough to have had Jacob in several different classes of mine,” says Caleb Warren, government teacher at WCHS. “Each time, he always put in the time and effort to go beyond the superficial and try to get at the core of whatever topic, issue, or question that we were looking into. There were very few moments when I felt that he wasn't giving as much as he could to the task at hand. Given that mindset of his, I'm confident that he'll succeed in whatever he aims towards after graduation.”
“I am very proud of Jacob Piasecki and all he has accomplished,” said Chase Burdette, math teacher at WCHS. “He has been a hardworking, dedicated student with a genuine commitment to learning. It has been a pleasure having him in class, and I wish him continued success at Columbia University.”
“As a teacher, I am very fortunate to have taught Jacob Piasecki,” said Matthew Garrett, a US history teacher at WCHS. “He is a phenomenal young man who is very well-rounded as one who excels in academics, athletics, and community involvement. His determination, commitment, and intrinsic motivation will foster him throughout his lifetime.”
“Jacob’s acceptance into Columbia University – one of the nation’s most prestigious Ivy League universities – is an extraordinary accomplishment and a moment of pride for our entire school community,” said WCHS Interim Principal Malissa Hutchins. “His dedication, strong work ethic, and commitment to excellence have truly set him apart. We are incredibly proud of Jacob and excited to see all he will accomplish at the next level.”
Jacob is the son of Laura and Joseph Piasecki.
