Washington County Schools Names Donovan Matthews District Athletic Director

SPRINGFIELD, Ky. — Donovan Matthews has been named the new district athletic director for Washington County Schools. Matthews is a 2020 graduate of Meade County High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management from Campbellsville University in 2024. During his time at CU, he spent two years as a collegiate athlete and two years as a student coach. He also worked in sports information for the majority of his collegiate years, gaining valuable experience in athletic communications, event operations, and media coverage. Additionally, he spent time working alongside the athletic director’s office, further developing his understanding of athletic administration. In addition to his athletic director responsibilities, Matthews will also serve as coordinator for Virtual School/Commander Academy.

Matthews developed a passion and calling to work with young people, build relationships, and help student-athletes grow both on and off the field. He believes athletics plays an important role in teaching leadership, discipline, accountability, and life lessons that extend far beyond sports. In his position with athletics, Donovan looks forward to building strong relationships with coaches, student-athletes, and the community while helping every athletic program continue to grow and succeed. “I care about helping young men and women become the adults they need to be,” said Matthews. “I want athletes and the student body to know that they are capable of anything and that I will do anything in my power to help them achieve their athletic or personal goals. I believe participation in athletics is one of the best ways to develop qualities that carry over into adult life. Even if a student never plays their sport another day after graduating from Washington County, my hope is that the impact this school and its athletic programs have on them will stay with them for the rest of their lives. May we help shape them into great men and women who will make a positive impact in everyone they come across.”
“When I became principal, my goal was to build momentum and renew our students’ and staff’s commitment to greatness, not only in academics, but in athletics, clubs and every extracurricular,” said Eric Sagrecy, principal of Washington County High School. “Adding Donovan is a big step toward fulfilling that commitment. He brings a fresh perspective and contagious energy to our athletic department, and he is committed to building something special here. He understands that doing so takes consistency in this position, and he brings a wealth of knowledge along with a real willingness to learn. Donovan, along with our other new additions since July, reflects our district and school leadership’s commitment to giving our students the very best opportunities throughout their high school careers. He will be an asset to our athletic programs and to our entire community. The best days for WCHS are ahead, and I couldn’t be more excited to have Donovan be a part of what we’re building!”
“We are excited to welcome Donovan Matthews to Washington County Schools as our new district athletic director,” said WCS Superintendent Dr. Robin Cochran. “His background in sports management, experience in collegiate athletics and commitment to helping young people grow make him a valuable addition to our team. We believe athletics plays an important role in developing leadership, accountability and character, and Donovan shares our commitment to ensuring students have opportunities to grow both on and off the field. We look forward to the relationships he will build with our coaches, student-athletes and community as we continue working to provide meaningful experiences and opportunities for all students.”
Matthews and his wife, Audrey, were married in March 2026.
