(Springfield, Ky.) – Washington County High School’s greenhouse will be open for business starting today. Bart Mattingly, WCHS agriculture teacher and advisor the WCHS chapter of Future Farmers of America (FFA) says that seeding, transplanting, variety selection and inventory started immediately after the holiday break. “We completed the Poinsettia sale and jumped right in to spring production,” he said. His students are given tasks and jobs to complete each day. “Mostly these are rotational where a student’s responsibility would change from one day to the next,” says Mattingly. “Now that we’re completing the production phase and moving into marketing, students are responsible for advertising, pricing and maintaining the greenhouse during the sale time – now until the end of the school year.”
Mattingly says that each year, the greenhouse plant production presents new challenges and rewards, this year in particular, with providing new varieties and items for their customers. “I am very pleased with how hard the students have worked to prepare plants, learn plant needs and look forward to the students getting the opportunities to work with the community, marketing the plants we have,” he said. “The FFA Greenhouse gives our kids the opportunity to get a ‘real life’ work setting many times before the students are able to secure their first jobs. In the greenhouse, we’re able to work with the kids teaching customer relations, communications and how to work with peers. I require Greenhouse students to work shifts outside of the normal school day to get them acclimated to the day to day operations of a work place, including Saturdays.”
